Cambridge graduate Philip Walters is Headmaster of the British School of Bucharest after joining the school in 2012 as Head of Secondary School. While at Christ's College, Cambridge, he read Geography. Philip taught the British Curriculum for many years in a highly selective UK grammar school as Head of Department before moving into the international sphere with a position at Harrow International School, in Bangkok, Thailand, where he worked for seven years as part of the Senior Leadership Team in the roles of Head of House and Head of Sixth Form.
Head of Primary School
Victoria Smith joined the British School of Bucharest in 2015 as Head of the Primary School. She acquired her PGCE and MA in International Education from the University of Sunderland in England and holds additional degrees in Spanish and Political Science. Following on her passion for professional development and school improvement, Victoria is an accredited facilitator of the COBIS Programme for Middle Leaders which is delivered to delegates from around the world. She is also qualified as a ‘Lead Improvement Partner’, helping other international schools obtain COBIS accreditation. Victoria has over 20 years of experience working with children and in schools and prior to becoming a teacher and senior leader, had a background in social services and Special Educational Needs (SEN).
Head of Secondary School and Teacher of MFL
Jason Porter joined the British School of Bucharest in 2013 as Deputy Head of Secondary and is now our Head of Secondary. He is a graduate of Exeter University, where he read Russian and German, and later qualified as a teacher of Modern Foreign Languages at the University of Nottingham. Jason joined the school following nine years as Housemaster at Chigwell School, a prestigious HMC Boarding School in the UK. Jason has obtained an MA course in Applied Educational Leadership and Management at University College London (Institute of Education).
Deputy Head of Primary School
Dan Batson is Deputy Head of Primary School at the British School of Bucharest, having joined in 2014. He oversees all curriculum and assessment matters within Primary and has led many whole-school projects, seeking out opportunities to incorporate technology effectively within the classroom. Dan graduated from Wolverhampton University and started his teaching career in the Birmingham area in 1998, working mainly in Key Stage 2 within the British Curriculum. In 2005, he joined a highly respected international British school in Abu Dhabi where he worked as Assistant Headteacher. He is also the Designated Safeguarding Lead .
Deputy Head of Primary School
Paul Gildea joined the British School of Bucharest in 2015, taking on the role of Key Stage 2 Coordinator and, more recently, Deputy Head of Primary School. He studied at the University of Durham and graduated with a degree in Russian and Eastern European Studies before undertaking a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) with a focus on Modern Foreign Languages. Paul gained experience in the British school system for eight years, rising to the position of Assistant Headteacher while working in two London primary schools. He has also worked as an English Subject Leader and Year 6 teacher at the British School of Beijing.
Deputy Head of Secondary (Pastoral and Enrichment) and Teacher of Physical Education
Mark Hooper is the Director of Enrichment, Examination Officer and International Award Coordinator, having joined the British School of Bucharest in 2014. Mark completed a BA in Sports Studies and his PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) at the University of Ulster, in Belfast. His experience in the UK was gained over 14 years at a highly selective grammar school, during which time he spent many years leading the Physical Education Department. After moving to New Zealand, he taught Physical Education and Science and was then Head of Year in a rural school in the South Island before becoming Director of the largest adult education provider in New Zealand, which also included a position on the Board of Governors at a large secondary school. Further international experience followed at the prestigious Garden International School, in Malaysia, where Mark worked for five years as Teacher of Physical Education and Examinations Officer.
Deputy Head of Secondary School and Teacher of Economics
Clare Hooper joined the British School of Bucharest in 2014 as Assistant Head of School with responsibility for staff professional development. She became Deputy Head of Secondary School in 2016. Clare read Economics at the University of Northumbria and became a teacher of Economics, Business and Accounting. She taught the British Curriculum for many years in two different UK schools before moving to New Zealand with her family. Following five years in New Zealand, Clare moved to the prestigious Garden International School, in Malaysia, where she led a large Business Education Faculty.
Class Teacher and Upper Key Stage 2 Coordinator
Rebecca Doganay joined the British School of Bucharest in 2017 as a Year 5 teacher and PHSCE Coordinator. Rebecca graduated with a degree in Primary Education from the University of Worcester in 2006 before spending two years working within the British school system in the UK, in both middle school and primary school settings. She then moved to an international school in Istanbul, where she was subject leader for PHSCE and English, as well as a Year 5 teacher for five years. Prior to joining our school, Rebecca was Head of Year and Humanities, Arts and PHSCE subject leader at another international school in Bucharest. She is also the Coordinator for Year 5 and Year 6.
Teacher of Humanities & University Guidance Counsellor
Jo Mattingley-Nunn is University Guidance Counsellor at the British School of Bucharest and also teaches Geography across Secondary. She joined the school's Humanities Department in 2015 and took on the newly created role of University Guidance Counsellor in 2018. A Geography graduate from the University of Leicester, Jo went on to teach Geography, Geology and History within the British school system before moving overseas, teaching in international schools in southeast Asia and western Europe.
