The Rhythm of Art @BSB

2020-2021 Performing Arts in Review

Although this year was restrictive, our students found freedom in performing arts like never before. Over the year, they’ve expressed themselves through various activities that helped them develop their skills and produce extraordinary acts. We’re going to go through some of the highlights of this year’s best moments. In the end, we’re going to leave you with a piece of rap music that summarises what a journey this year has been.

Key Stage 2

Years 2, 3 and 4 have been developing their miming skills, facial expressions and body language by embodying knights fighting dragons or soldiers in the Roman Army or telling stories in performance poetry lessons. Our Year 5 expanded their Drama skills and techniques by playing the well-known characters from Roald Dahl’s ‘Matilda’ and explored important issues such as bullying. Our Year 6 developed their improvisation and storytelling skills through make-believe and spooky mysteries, and studying Arabian Nights.

Key Stage 3

Throughout Key Stage 3 Drama, students have explored various acting styles and topics with their year group bubbles while social distancing. The great outdoor spaces and facilities on our beautiful campus provided our students with much-needed freedom to work in the sun. They improved their soft skills and developed their artistic craft by tackling various subjects, from mask work to stage combat and Shakespeare.

Key Stage 4 and 5

Key Stage 4 and 5 students have wowed and entertained their peers and staff members with exemplary Drama monologues and duologues this academic year. They’ve improved their acting skills and techniques, applied analytical and theoretical knowledge by studying various plays and produced extraordinary performances. Even if they couldn’t perform to a live audience, they adapted to the circumstances and learned valuable skills like flexibility, perseverance and grit that will be their life-long companions.

We’re proud of our students, and we congratulate them for their incredible performances this year, and now we’re going to leave you with the wise and insightful words that ‘rap’ up how it was in Music class this year.

(to be read as a rap)

Tempo de Pandemic – 110

Tbh, this year’s been a bit tough

Without any singing, music’s been rough

Changing our plans and pivoting round

To keep music fun with a Focus on Sound

Singing outside if it’s not raining.

Listening to trap, other teachers complaining.

Luckily tech has brought us together.

We could compose with that whatever the weather.

And music theory has come to the fore

Back in class reading music won’t be a chore

Every Good Boy Deserves Football

Face in the spaces…that’s all

21/22 we’ll be coming up strong

Y’all join in with our come-back song!
