English as an Additional Language
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
The primary function of the EAL department (English as an Additional Language) at BSB is to provide the necessary English support to help students with a low level of English integrate quickly and easily into an English language environment. We have a team of professionally qualified, experienced EAL teachers to ensure that our students obtain all the English support they need in order to enjoy their time here at BSB and to find success with their studies.
All students attending BSB are assessed to determine their level of English. Students identified as needing support will be offered EAL lessons in small groups within the normal student timetable. In-class support is also provided when appropriate.
The focus in Key Stages 1 and 2 is on oral skills, listening and speaking, to help the students to understand what is going on in the classroom and to form friendships with other students.
At Key Stage 3 and above, students receive individual subject support as well as assistance with English language. They have the option of taking the University of Cambridge KET (Key English Test) and PET (Preliminary English Test) examinations, which gives them a recognized qualification in English. Students generally return to full-time lessons after passing PET, although in-class support continues to be offered when necessary.
