All aspects of the performing arts are highly valued at the British School of Bucharest. Our performing arts curriculum strives to make every child appreciate the performing arts by immersing them and feeding their passions through understanding the role art plays in everyday life.
Drama as a subject promotes both independence and collaboration. At our school, students are assessed on self-management, group work and effective participation. The curriculum will inspire pupils to develop a range of life skills through confidence, teamwork, exploring emotions and cultural significance through artistic exploration. Having the opportunity to role-play situations in this way supports students' personal development.
Key Stage 3
Students will study at least four different schemes of work over the entire year, one of which will be a play text, whereas another will tackle personal, social or health issues. Some topics will include drama roles, character and plot creation, and theatrical genres and style.
Key Stage 4
In the IGCSE Drama course in Key Stage 4, students will develop their performance skills, both individually and in groups and get a better understanding of the role of the actor, director and designer when creating a piece of theatre. They will also gain valuable knowledge in understanding repertoire, devise dramatic material and improve their acting skills.
Key Stage 5
The AS/ A Level Drama and Theatre course aims to develop in students an analytical framework for making, performing, interpreting and understanding drama and theatre and give them the necessary knowledge to understand the practices used in Twenty-First Century theatre-making. Depending on the type of course, AS or A Level, the course components differ.
Besides the usual Drama curriculum, students have the opportunity to participate or get involved in a series of events that can teach them more about the different stages of organising a show or a memorable performance, or they can participate in special Drama trips.
Every year, pupils can get involved in the 'Secondary Production' CCA, a unique Co-curricular activity through which pupils can get involved in the performance or technical side of things. A range of CCA's connected to the 'Secondary Production' is offered that include performance (acting, dance/singing), costumes, set, props and music (the band).
The Secondary Drama ISTA trip
The yearly Secondary Drama International Schools Theatre Association (ISTA) trip is always hugely successful, enjoyable, and a great learning experience for all students involved. During this educational trip, they learn how to work together as an ensemble and collaborate with students from around the world. We send groups of Secondary Students to ISTA Festivals around Europe every year.
London Theatre Experience
On this trip, pupils get the opportunity to watch up to four professional shows, work with the cast and explore London itself. The trip will offer Key Stage 4 and 5 students the chance to work with professionals. It is an experience for any students interested in Drama and Music outside of the curriculum, those studying Drama or Music GCSE, or students still interested in Drama despite not choosing it as a subject at school. It gives students the unique opportunity to work with students and professionals from all around the world.
We aim to enhance all students' musical performance, analytical and compositional skills by utilizing our excellent Music Department facilities. We challenge students with many practical tasks using a wide range of instruments and by studying music from a broad spectrum of cultures. Our firm belief is that all students have musical potential. Even those who do not choose to follow a career in music can develop practical cross-curricular skills, such as coordination and teamwork.
Outside of the curriculum, students are encouraged to participate in ensembles and perform in events such as the House Music Competition and School Recitals, helping develop their sense of community and their ability to become comfortable performing in front of an audience.
We have a wonderful orchestra at the British School of Bucharest, the school's largest musical group. It has been growing and improving steadily over recent years. By creating new and unique musical arrangements, our expert Music teachers can accommodate and engage participants of mixed ages and abilities. Less experienced players can improve their ability by learning from older or more experienced pupils. Participants learn to work in a team towards creating a performance while also learning the professional orchestra rehearsal discipline basics.
Key Stage 3
Key Stage 3 Music focuses on acquiring skills so that students can actively participate in solo and ensemble performances and compositions. All students will have the opportunity to sing and learn classroom instruments, such as ukulele, guitar and keyboard. Furthermore, they will specialise in an orchestral instrument from the woodwind, brass or string families.
Music technology and interactive software enhance practical learning and improve the three main activities of performing, composing, and listening. Students will study the different features and musical elements used in various classical, world, blues and pop music. Over the three years of Key Stage 3, students will learn how to use melody, chords and rhythm to create music in a variety of different styles, including using classical structures, pop and rock songwriting and improvising.
Key Stage 4
In the GCSE Music course, students learn how to improve their performing skills and gain an insight into how music is constructed, from the initial ideas to the finished product. We follow the Edexcel GCSE Music syllabus.
Key Stage 5
Students in the AS/A Level course will learn about context and the elements of music to enhance and develop their musical interests and skills in composing, performing and analysis skills. They will study in the same manner as at GCSE but at a higher level, with a more complex exploration of harmony and tonality and the other elements of music when it comes to performing, composing and understanding music.
