The Creative Arts & Design Technology Department’s philosophy embraces the need to equip all pupils for the world they live in. To work and develop the needs of those who will eventually pursue careers in a design-related discipline by developing their creative skills to conceive and be able to create with their very own hands.
Our specialist Art tutors teach and mentor students wishing to explore visual arts, photography and design.
All students in Key Stage 3 study art at BSB and as an option subject in Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5.
The emphasis is on student-generated ideas and projects as part of the regular curriculum. As students move through their IGCSE/GCSE course, they are encouraged to find their own identity through their work. The results, therefore, become increasingly personal.
Key Stage 3
The programme and content of study vary each year in Art, though it is consistently underpinned by the application of drawing as a recording and communication tool. Additionally, the structure and importance of the creative process (research, recording, development and experimentation) are embedded throughout all the Key Stage 3 classes to prepare students for the demands and expectations of Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 examination courses.
Key Stage 4
In Key Stage 4, the GCSE Art & Design course will build upon skills taught in Key stage 3, such as printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, lens light media, textiles, painting and drawing. Students will be able to experiment with different art materials through a range of techniques and approaches, from 3D design to graphic communications. Some practical areas covered in Design Technology will also be highly relevant to this course.
Key Stage 5
The AS/A Level Art & Design – Fine-Art course is wide-ranging, covering many approaches to creating Art and Design, with four broad aims to develop the student’s individual work, imagination, creativity and intuitive powers. They will learn about and understand the contexts and inter-relationships between art, craft and design.
All students will be introduced to ideas, processes, materials and techniques relevant to different aspects of art and design. Assignments will explore drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed-media, contextual study work, informing coursework and contributing to a portfolio for application to art foundation courses.
This course is particularly relevant to careers involving Art and Design, Fine Art, 3D design – including model making, stage design, sculpture, graphics or illustration with employment opportunities in professional creative industries.
Studying Design Technology (DT) is a creative process involving applying knowledge and skills through the designing and making of products. It is a subject in which elegant ideas lead to products of flair and creativity. The British School of Bucharest students combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make innovative products that meet human needs. The Creative Faculty vision empowers students to be responsible, self-directed and adaptable learners.
Key Stage 3
In Key Stage 3, students will gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making. They will work in various domestic and local contexts (for example, the home, health, leisure and culture) and industrial contexts (for example, engineering, manufacturing, construction, energy).
The curriculum has four main themes: Design, Make, Evaluate and Technical expertise.
Key Stage 4
During the IGCSE Design & Technology course, students will identify design opportunities and find ways to improve designs and incorporate technological improvements. They will also explore a variety of media and use a range of equipment to produce models and mock-ups as a means of exploring a design problem.
Key Stage 5
The AS Design Technology: Product Design course is a one-year course comprised of two components that, when combined, make up the full AS qualification.
Through this course, students develop an awareness of the significance of design and technology to society, learn more about production processes and industrial practices, and develop critical evaluation skills that can be employed in various technical, aesthetic, economic, environmental, social and cultural contexts. They will learn how to apply this knowledge in practice by gaining an understanding of a wide range of materials and the processes used in product design and manufacture.
BSB - Designed for creativity
The British School of Bucharest has three well-equipped Art Rooms where students can learn and create art all through the day. Light, airy and very comfortable to work in, these inspiring rooms are available to students throughout the school day.
The creativity on display in these Art Rooms, from pupils of all ages, is a true reflection of the immense artistic talent within our school.
The school’s large and spacious DT workshop is fully equipped to promote insight into the design process and develop essential design skills. We maintain a good balance for pupils between traditional handwork skills and the use of computers to design and manufacture. Students learn to effectively use the latest CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology within our DT facility, including a laser cutter, a CNC router, a vinyl cutter and 3D printers. Combined with our range of modern computer-controlled machines for routing, milling, turning, and utilising more traditional wood materials and plastics, students learn practical skills through collaboration, communication, and reflection.
